Whataburger Moving to San Antonio

Sunday November 23, 2008
In a surprising move, Corpus Christi mainstay Whataburger is moving their corporate headquarters to San Antonio.

Several reasons were given for the move, including fear of hurricane damage in the seaside city of Corpus and a better airport for executives to travel in and out of.

The move means that 250 employees will be asked to relocate to San Antonio, some as soon as early 2009. There is no word yet where the headquarters will be, as the company is still looking at spaces.

What do you think of the move?

I think it’s great. Even though Corpus Christi was the founding home, San Antonio will likely give tax credits and rental allowances for the corporate move as many cities do. Also, the note about better airports is true. As much as I like Corpus Christi, the people just don’t utilize the airport and thus, less airport traffic, less airlines willing to fly in and out, thus executives looking for better transport, thus companies moving.

Also, it would be a great opportunity for growth for the company. Hopefully an IPO????
