Proposed Graffiti Rules Would Punish Parents

Thursday July 2, 2009
Graffiti or 'tagging' as some call it is always a problem here in San Antonio. As far back as I can remember, it has been in and around schools, alleys and other areas with lots of clean wall space. Time and again, the city has tried to combat it with very mixed results.

Now a new proposal would fine the parents of those minors who are caught tagging walls. City Councilman John Clamp is a fan, as is the city of Corpus Christi, which has been suing parents of taggers for two years already.

Do you support this plan? Is graffiti a problem in your area? If it is, you can dial 311 and receive a free kit to help you clean up the mess that includes a bucket and paint to cover up the graffiti.

Graffiti is a big problem in San Antonio. Drive into almost any neighborhood and you are sure to find it. I feel it is a good idea to fine parents. I would like to see stricter penalties on the violator. How about intensive mandatory hard labor clean of graffiti in our city! If the parents cannot pay for the fine, order the kid to work off the fine with extra clean up.

(2) Tired of seeing the tagging says:

I’m tired of seeing the graffetti at Payless on Nogalitos. Time and time again they paint over the graffetti and the taggers tag again. I hope they catch these kids and they need to make them paint over there mess or better yet have them tag there house to see if there parents appeciate it.

Your looking at graffiti as some kind of murder of a wall. It’s art, and allot of it’s good art. (comment 2) If a cop had told me to paint on my parents house, that would have been one of the greatest days of my life. Though tagging houses is not something a real graffiti artist would do.
