Reminder About Tax-Free Weekend

By August 3, 2009

With all the school supply and uniform sales heating up (appropriate given that it is now August), I thought it would be good to remind you about the tax-free holiday coming up and the changes surrounding it.

As noted in a blog post over a month ago, there were many things added to the tax-free weekend. Instead of just shoes and clothes, now most school supplies priced under $100 are a part of the tax-free goodness.

The holiday runs from August 21-23, 2009. This is a bit later than usual but most public schools are starting later in the year than in the past, so the later date is a direct result of that. To see a full list of all tax-free items, visit the official State Comptroller's site.

I agree, it should be earlier to give you time to properly plan and ensure that anything that is run out of on Tax-Free Weekend can be re-stocked. But as is often the case with decisions made by politicians, they just don’t always make sense.

After relocating to Texas from the Northeast I didn’t understand why the the first weekend in August was tax free. That time period was much too early; but, holding a worthwhile shopping incentive just before school starts is rediculous. The Sales Tax Holiday should place in the middle of the month thus giving consumers the opportunity to take advantage of timely yet stress free shopping. The State should confer with Retail Marketing professionals who are familiar with their shoppers buying habits.
