Seasonal Hiring Brings Down November Unemployment Numbers

By December 19, 2009

With estimates that this year's Black Friday and overall holiday shopping season would not be as dismal as last year, many retailers began hiring several seasonal employees to anticipate the rush.

The hiring locally dropped November unemployment to 6.8%, down from the previous high in October of an even 7%.

While some employment sectors such as hospitality and leisure were down for the month (due to summer seasonal hires being let go) other sectors were up enough to more than balance out the job losses and make the month an overall gain.

The numbers are better than most areas of the nation that are still being hit hard by the still-sagging economy and are good even for the state of Texas, which overall has seen one of the strongest economic and job situations in the entire country.
