Sea World San Antonio Welcomes Baby Killer Whale

By January 10, 2010

It doesn't happen very often, so I thought it was worth mentioning. A baby killer whale has been born at Sea World of San Antonio. Last Thursday, Takara become the third baby killer whale born to Takara, a 5,000+ pound killer whale.

There are not stats about the size or weight of the killer whale-- in fact Sea World doesn't even know if the baby is a boy or a girl! Since there is so much secrecy regarding the calf and park officials said they are "cautiously optimistic" that the calf is healthy, could this mean something is wrong? Or are the killer whale handlers simply letting the pair rest and will find out more later? Only time will tell.

This is the 26th live killer whale birth across the numerous Sea World adventure parks, including locations in Florida and San Diego. There was also a Sea World in Ohio for a number of years, though that particular park has since been shuttered.

UPDATE: Thanks to Sea World for getting a hold of me on Twitter to give me a link to a video about the new baby calf. He/she certainly looks good! For more info about the calf or the park, follow @SeaWorldTexas on Twitter. And of course, you can follow this website as well, @AboutSanAntonio.
