In 1929, the building was constructed as the Colored Library Auditorium. In 1938, it was renamed Carver Library Auditorium after George Washington Carver.
African Americans were prevented from joining mainstream cultural centers by segregation and the Carver Library Auditorium served as a cultural hub for their community. Throughout the 1950s, many acclaimed African American artists performed at the center, including Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong.
The building underwent renovations in 1976 and was re-opened as the Carver Community Cultural Center.
The Carver Cultural Community Center is home to many concerts, plays, performances and other community events throughout the year.
