MLK Day, Monday, January 21, 2008, marks the 21st anniversary of San Antonio's Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March and Commemorative Program.
The San Antonio MLK March is considered the largest march in the country aimed at remembering and continuing the legacy of Dr. King.
The three-mile march begins at the Eastside Boys & Girls Club at 3500 MLK Drive (MLK Freedom Bridge) at 10:00am on January 21st. The march ends at Pittman-Sullivan Park located at 1101 Iowa, where the commemorative program and job fair are taking place.
A prayer service will be held before the march at 8:00am at the Boys & Girls Club. View the MLK march route.
The 2008 Commemorative Program begins at noon. The featured speaker is Dr. Terrence Roberts, member of the Little Rock Nine. Dr. Roberts is CEO of Terrence J. Roberts & Associates; Desegration Consultant, Little Rock, Arkansas School District; and Core Faculty Member, Antioch University, Los Angeles.
Vendors will be selling food and beverages at the park with proceeds from beverages benefiting the MLK Commission. Funds will go directly toward the expense of commemorative events and MLK scholarships.
Special guests include recording artist Kim Burrell.
The job fair will also take place from 9:00am to 4:00pm at Pittman-Sullivan Park. Many local San Antonio companies are taking part in this event. For more information on the job fair, please contact Lisa Juarez at (210) 364-7377.
The events on January 21st are just a small part of the MLK festivities going on in San Antonio. Check out the MLK event calendar for more details.
