Guide Review - COCO Lounge and Bistro Review

A bachelorette party. Co-worker happy hour. Dinner with loved ones. Date night because you scored a sitter. There are a host of reasons why COCO Chocolate Lounge and Bistro is a popular hot spot for dinner and dance.

Located in the Legacy Shopping Center in north San Antonio, COCO offers dining with french flare and a booming dance scene after 10 p.m. The decor is trendy with romantic chandelier lighting, stylish plush crimson seating, polished floors and crisp linens.

Dining at COCO:

Among the appetizers, you’ll find an escargot with a garlic pesto feel, crunchy calamari with a kick, and an fresh pate’ with fruity preserves. You’ll find a nice juxtaposition of salty and sweet with signature COCO Chocolate Salad; white chocolate shavings included. There’s also a soup of the day. On this day: a hearty French Onion served up in a mini cauldron.

Dinner specials are limited to a $20 a la carte. You pick between an entree with a starter or an entree and a dessert. Otherwise, entrees from pasta to steak, chicken to salmon start at $15. Surprisingly, you’ll also find several decent pizza options that offer thin crust crunch. These are complete pies, so plan to share or a to-go box may be in order.

Where COCO is perhaps most impressive is in its drinks menu, where you’ll find several vodka based chocolaty delights. Try the White Chocolate Cucumber for something completely unexpected. You can also enjoy several fine wines and champagne. Pair it with one of COCO’s decadent desserts including smooth white cheesecake, strawberry topped creme brulee and chocolate fondue for one or two.

Service at COCO is friendly and staff is eager to brag about its menu. Your glass of water never goes empty and plates are removed swiftly. COCO creates a subdued, relaxing environment for a romantic evening or gab with the girls. While walk-in dining is available, reservations are encouraged especially for larger parties.

Dancing at COCO:

After 10 p.m, the lights dim even more as this bistro transforms into a vibrant 21 and over dance haven with multi-music options. There is a $5 cover. The back patio is an outdoor party for hip-hop and reggae enthusiasts. The main lounge area is all about Latino music: salsa, merengue and bachata. A second lounge is dedicated to club house and techno sounds. Each section has a great live DJ and a busy bar with all your nightclub standards.

Due to its popularity, a number of issues arise. Seating becomes a premium during nightclub hours. Tables and lounge areas must be reserved, and can book weeks, even months in advance. COCO does provide private party options and packages. If you're planning a special night out at COCO, calling ahead is certainly recommended. Limited outdoor patio seating is first come, first serve. Wear comfortable shoes.

Unless you come early or opt for valet, finding a close parking spot is also a challenge. There is plenty of parking within the Legacy Shopping Center, but prepare to walk. If you don’t like large crowds, you may not like after hours at COCO. Even a spin on the dance floor can be a challenge with the number of people attending at one time. If you like one big house party, including some possible dance floor gridlock, then COCO is right up your alley.
