Most National Night Outs were held this year in August. But Texas had an exemption to be able to hold their date in October, therefore this year's date will be October 5, 2010.
San Antonio has traditionally had a great turnout for this, and last year they ranked 2nd overall in all participating cities with at least 300,000 residents. As a state, Texas ranked 1st overall for 2009!
What is it?The National Night Out (NNO) is a community event meant to increase awareness of anti-drug programs and crime awareness and protection. It is also meant to increase community bonds with the police department and other neighborhoods.
Each neighborhood or block that wants to participate must register. The registration form is very simple and available on the official registration page.[/link] Last year's NNO had between 160,000-180,000 participants in San Antonio alone.
Many neighborhoods that participate wish to close off a street in order to allow for increased safety and mobility. Doing this allows participants in the NNO to freely move back and forth without worrying about traffic. In order to do this, you need official city permission and pay a $75 fee. You can find out more by opening about an official street closure.
Remember, this is optional for convenience but is not necessary to participate in NNO activities.
