International Women's Day History: Celebrated on March 8th,
International Women's Day (IWD) marks a day connecting all women around the world. IWD has been observed since the early 1900's and celebrates the collective power of women.
IWD commemorates an 1857 demonstration in New York City by female garment and textile workers. Protesting inhumane working conditions, child labor, and 16-hour work days, women marched from the streets of New Yorks lower East Side to rich neighborhoods bringing attention to their cause.
About International Women's Day : Each year on March 8th, women assert their political and social rights, review the historical progress women have made, and celebrate the power of women, while looking toward the future.
Cities throughout the United States and in many countries around the world celebrate International Women's Day with marches, commemorative programs, and other festivities.
San Antonio IWD: In San Antonio, women rally together with a march starting at Travis Park (711 Navarro Street) and ending at Milam Park (500 W. Commerce Street). At Milam Park, women, artists and activists perform and give speeches about international and local women's issues. Information tables and booths are also set up around the park.
