The organization was established in 1982 by Nancy G. Brinker in memory of her sister, who died from breast cancer at the young age of 36.
Today the organization has 125 international affiliates, including the San Antonio branch which was established in 1997.
In 2007, the San Antonio Race for the Cure attracted more than 27,000 participants and raised more than $1 million.
Up to 75% of the affiliate's net income stays in the San Antonio community, funding local breast cancer treatment, screening and education projects. The remaining money goes to into the Susan G. Komen for the Cure program, raising monies for research worldwide.
You can form a new team, join an existing team, register as an individual, or make a donation by logging on to the Komen San Antonio Race for the Cure website.
