The history of Monte Vista is very storied, as it played a very big role in what was known as San Antonio's "Guilded Age." This was an age where people flaunted their affluence in the burgeoining town by building large homes like the ones seen in Monte Vista. By the early 1900s, it was the most influential and affluent neighborhood in the city, and one of the best in the entire state, too. It maintains it's high status in large part because of the efforts of the Monte Vista Historical Association. Today it houses more than 3,000 residents.
There are some high end and budget-friendly restaurants in Monte Vista that rank amongst the best in San Antonio. Demo's
is a great spot for Mediterranean and has been around for over 30 years,La Fonda on Main
and Panchitos for Mexican. Arguably the most popular of all the eateries to be found in Monte Vista is Chris Madrid's.
They are consistently rated either Best Burger or in the top three by numerous local publications and polls.
Activities, Attractions and Shopping:
Even if you are a native, staying at a Bed and Breakfast can be an enjoyable vacation within the city. Two of the best are the Academy House and the Belle of Monte Vista. These are also a great place to have weddings and receptions. The Monte Vista Historical Association holds many different functions throughout the year, particularly for holidays like the 4th of July and Easter. Visit the official webpage
for more information about these events.
By far the most interesting thing about Monte Vista besides the history is the types of housing you can find there. If you like Queen Anne, Prairie, Tudor, or even Spanish Colonial Revival homes, then Monte Vista is the place for you. A drive through some of the streets here will provide hours of entertainment if historical architecture is your thing. You can even buy a great book about it (with over 130 photos) that was written by a local professor. San Antonio's Monte Vista: Architecture and Society in a Gilded Age
is an affordable book that goes block-by-block through the neighborhood.
