Beacon Hill

From Kori Ellis, for About.com

Beacon Hill Overview:
Beacon Hill is a quiet neighborhood in Midtown, the central area of San Antonio which is well-known for its architecture, history and cultural arts. Some of the areas surrounding Beacon Hill have been given historical status such as Monte Vista.

Although Beacon Hill does have a neighborhood association, its goals are not as lofty as achieving historical status. Instead, they are more concerned about community upkeep.

Beacon Hill Boundaries:
The area known as Beacon Hill is bordered by Hildebrand Avenue to the north, Fredericksburg Avenue to the south, the Southern Pacific and Union Pacific Railroad tracks to the east and Blanco Road on the West.
Beacon Hill Neighborhood Association:
The Beacon Hill Area Neighborhood Association (BHANA) is a non-profit organization "dedicated to neighborhood unity and revitalization." Meetings are held the second Monday of each month at the Beacon Hill Presbyterian Church located at 1101 West Woodlawn. Meetings, held in the basement, start promptly at 7:00pm unless otherwise indicated in advance.

BHANA is comprised of several committees that includes Heart of the Neighborhood (HON), Arts and Beautification, Animal Care, Benevolence, Graffiti Cleanup, Linear Park and Zoning.

There is also a monthly newsletter that reaches the 2,200 homes located in Beacon Hill.

Beacon Hill History:
Several homes in Beacon Hill were built in the early 1900s as San Antonio transitioned from a stop off for cattle drives to a legitimate city where families settled and set up house.

Most houses are either Victorian style or resemble bungalows, which were easy to build and maintain for the lower class families of the area.

Beacon Hill Homes:
Unfortunately, many Beacon Hill homes were abandoned as residents started to look towards outlying areas in San Antonio. In recent years, several of these houses were bought, renovated and now can be found for sale or rent. Like most inner city areas of San Antonio, Beacon Hill finds itself in a transition from a formerly lower-class area to a safe, middle class area with homes and neighborhoods that residents are proud to own.
Beacon Hill Schools:
The Beacon Hill area is served by SAISD. Beacon Hill elementary schools are Agnes Cotton Elementary School and Beacon Hill Elementary.

The only middle school in Beacon Hill Twain Middle School while teenagers are served by Thomas Edison High.

More About Beacon Hill:
Beacon Hill is served on the San Antonio City Council by District 1 representative Roger O. Flores and in the State Legislature as District 123. Beacon Hill also has its own SAFFE officer, Alfred Martinez who can be reached at amartinez@sanantonio.gov.
