Cibolo

From Kori Ellis, for About.com

Cibolo Overview:
Cibolo is a city located in the far northeast area of the greater San Antonio metropolitan area, approximately 20 miles northeast of downtown. Its neighbors include Schertz, Selma and Universal City to name a few.

It is just across Cibolo Creek, which straddles the boundary between Bexar County and Guadalupe County. Map.

Cibolo History:
Like most areas in Guadalupe County, Cibolo enjoys a rich history that goes back more than a century. The word 'cibolo' means 'buffalo' in Spanish because Cibolo Creek was an area where buffalo were once very plentiful.

In the mid-1800s, many Germans began to settle in South and Central Texas, including a man named Jacob Schlather who bought land in the area. Together, he and his son George built a store that enabled more Germans to settle in the area because they would be able to get supplies to live off of.

Cibolo Growth:
The settling of Cibolo was further enhanced with the building of a railroad through town in 1877. It was then that a post office and school were started, and Cibolo has continued to grow and thrive ever since.

Today, the population stands at 3,035 as of the 2000 census with an estimated 2006 population of 10,085. Compare this to a population of only 657 in 1988 and you will see exactly how rapidly people have flocked to Cibolo.

Cibolo Housing:
The houses in Cibolo are mostly mortgaged, family-owned homes. In fact, only one in every eight homes is a rental in Cibolo. The median house cost is $159,900 which is more than $50,000 higher than the state average. These houses tend to be 3-5 bedrooms with 2-4 bathrooms.

Some of the subdivisions of Cibolo include The Heights, Belmont Park and Falcon Ridge. Property taxes are a bit high in Cibolo, though many think it is worth it because of the safety of the area and good education children receive from the public schools there.

Cibolo Schools:
Residents of Cibolo will send their children to the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD). This school district serves the children of the three cities in its name plus a tiny part of nearby Marion.

Children in elementary will attend O.G. Wiederstein Elementary or Maxine & Lutrell Watts Elementary. Barbara Jordan Intermediate is the intermediate while J. Frank Dobie Junior High is for grades 7-8. J. Frank Dobie Junior High serves teenagers in grades 9-12. For more information about SCUCISD schools including each individual campus, visit scuc.txed.net.

Cibolo Attractions:
The Cibolo Nature Center is 100 acres of preserved land sprawling out over the scenic Texas Hill Country. It has several nature trails over marshland and also provides education about wildlife and conservation.

Over 100,000 visitors visit the nature center each year. For more information, visit their city website at cibolo.org.
