It is a thriving community with a rich history that was recently named the #1 place in Texas to live, and #40 in the entire United States by CNN Money. It can claim this distinction because of overall low crime rates, a high median income and housing average and a good economy.
Most homes in Schertz are 3-4 bedroom range. Rental properties bring in an average of $602 per month. This includes rental houses and vacation properties, as well as apartment or condo rentals.
Schertz children attend Schertz Elementary, Norma J. Paschal Elementary or Green Valley Elementary. Grades six through eight attend Laura Ingalls Wilder Intermediate while HS students mostly attend Samuel Clemens HS, although a new high school is slated to open in 2008 due to the population explosion. There are generally bands, a parade, crafting vendors, rides, food and more. The festivities generally start a few days before the 4th of July and continue on through the holiday.
The history of Schertz goes all the way back to 1844, when the first German settlers arrived. Originally called "Cibolo Pit," the city was later re-named after one of the most prominent families in town, some of whose decedents with the last name Schertz still reside in the city today.
Like many nearby towns like Kirby and Converse, cotton mills were a way of life in early Schertz, fueling the economy and population growth. When the railroads were built through town in the 1870s, everything boomed. By the early 1900s Schertz had a bank, church, post office and its present-day name. Many of these buildings still stand today as a testament to how important historic preservation is to the City of Schertz.
In 1920 Randolph Air Force base was built, giving yet another boost to the growing community. It was incorporated into a city in 1964 and today is considered to be a suburb of San Antonio even as it grows and continues to straddle county lines. Today, the population is 18,694 and counting.
