Schertz

From Kori Ellis, for About.com

Schertz Overview: Schertz is a city that has parts of the city limits in three counties: Bexar, Comal and Guadalupe. It just is outside of San Antonio on the far northeast side. Most of the city is located in Guadalupe County, about 19 miles west of Seguin.

It is a thriving community with a rich history that was recently named the #1 place in Texas to live, and #40 in the entire United States by CNN Money. It can claim this distinction because of overall low crime rates, a high median income and housing average and a good economy.

Schertz Housing: Schertz is largely residential, with the median housing price at $139,900 or nearly $34,000 more than the average in all of Texas. This is due mainly to the higher median household income of $61,700 or almost $20,000 higher than the Texas average for a family. Around 80% of the homes in Schertz are owned, while 20% are rented. Nearly 1,000 of the residents are rural residents, around 70 of whom are farm residents.

Most homes in Schertz are 3-4 bedroom range. Rental properties bring in an average of $602 per month. This includes rental houses and vacation properties, as well as apartment or condo rentals.

Schertz Schools: Children living in Schertz can expect to attend school in the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District (SCUCISD). As the name suggests, the SCUCISD shares access to schools with Cibolo and Universal City.

Schertz children attend Schertz Elementary, Norma J. Paschal Elementary or Green Valley Elementary. Grades six through eight attend Laura Ingalls Wilder Intermediate while HS students mostly attend Samuel Clemens HS, although a new high school is slated to open in 2008 due to the population explosion. Schertz Attractions: Many historical places are located in Schertz, but the biggest attraction each year is the 4th of July Jubilee and Parade.

There are generally bands, a parade, crafting vendors, rides, food and more. The festivities generally start a few days before the 4th of July and continue on through the holiday.

Schertz History:
The history of Schertz goes all the way back to 1844, when the first German settlers arrived. Originally called "Cibolo Pit," the city was later re-named after one of the most prominent families in town, some of whose decedents with the last name Schertz still reside in the city today.

Like many nearby towns like Kirby and Converse, cotton mills were a way of life in early Schertz, fueling the economy and population growth. When the railroads were built through town in the 1870s, everything boomed. By the early 1900s Schertz had a bank, church, post office and its present-day name. Many of these buildings still stand today as a testament to how important historic preservation is to the City of Schertz.

In 1920 Randolph Air Force base was built, giving yet another boost to the growing community. It was incorporated into a city in 1964 and today is considered to be a suburb of San Antonio even as it grows and continues to straddle county lines. Today, the population is 18,694 and counting.
