After the bustle of December, the San Antonio January events calendar may seem a little slim as people take a well-earned rest from the harried Holidays. There are still plenty of good concerts and museum openings to go to, though in case you get cabin fever.

Marcia Gygli King: The Metaphors of Life

01/28/2009 6:00-9:00 p.m. Opening reception, exhibit runs through March 1, 2009.

The opening reception for the new Marcia Gygli King Retrospective is held tonight with a one hour lecture from Robert C. Morgan entitled "The Metaphors of Life." The famous artist (who has galleries here in San Antonio and in New York City) is being honored for her body of work and evolution, which spans 40 years. The San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA), UTSA and the Southwest School of Art & Craft jointly present the venture, with two more events to mark the exhibit. Tonight's event is at the UTSA Arts Building – 1604 Campus.

Marcia Gygli King: Botanical Paintings

January 29, 5:00-8:00 p.m., exhibit runs through April 12, 2009

Another opening reception for the new Marcia Gygli King Retrospective is held tonight, this time for the era of her career entitled "Botanical Paintings." This part of the celebration of her 40 years of art is held at the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) with a three-hour presentation. There will also be another presentation on February 3rd including a lecture by David S. Rubin the Curator of Contemporary Art for the Brown Foundation. More information will be available in the February calendar.

Marcia Gygli King: Spontaneous Combustion

January 29, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. reception, exhibit runs through March 29, 2009

Third in three concurrent exhibits that follow different aspects of Marcia Gygli King's work begins tonight at the Southwest School of Art & Craft. The three hour reception is to be held at the Russell Hills Gallery of the Navarro Campus.

Music on the Move: Latin America

January 31, 2009, 7:00 p.m.

The Music on the Move series presents its second concert in January featuring Latin American stylings of everything from Tangos to the Beatles.

Asian Festival — Year of the Ox

January 31, 2009, 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Lunar New Year presents an opportunity to learn more about Asian Culture in San Antonio through this day-long celebration at the Institute of Texan Cultures.

San Antonio Symphony Welcomes Joshua Bell

January 31, 2009, 8:00 p.m.

Grammy-winning violinist Joshua Bell make a stop at the Majestic Theatre for one night. Ticket prices will be available on the linked website soon.
