The 33rd Annual San Antonio Marathon - Marathon of the Americas will take place on November 11, 2007. The runners begin downtown at the Alamo and make their way to the finish line at the Alamodome.
Runners race through historical San Antonio as the single-loop course tours the Alamo, the San Antonio Historical Missions, King William Historic District, Old Lone Star Brewery and other areas near the San Antonio River.
The Half Marathon course is similar to the full marathon but breaks away early and heads to the Alamodome. The 5K participants start at the Alamo, go to Market Square, then circle back down Houston Street and the Majestic Theater, back to the Alamo and then head to the finish inside the Alamodome.
In 1975, Diego Vacca, a staff member of the Downtown YMCA organized Las Colonias Marathon - the first San Antonio marathon.
Throughout the years, the marathon has grown to become an annual event recognized around the country. Over 800 volunteers and dozens of corporate sponsors are involved to make the race possible every year.
The partnership between the City of San Antonio, the San Antonio YMCA, and the San Antonio Road Runners has maintained "a commitment to youth; the promotion of improved health and fitness through running; a labor of love for running by thousands of volunteers; financial and in-kind support from local sponsors; and promotion of San Antonio as a city for tourism and running."
