Mexican Manhattan

About.com Rating fourhalf out of Five

From Melissa Martinez, for About.com

The Bottom Line

From the front of the modest-looking Mexican Manhattan restaurant, you would never know that it is a large eatery that has expanded twice and offers patio dining on the San Antonio River, a private party room and some of the best Mexican food in the city.

The prices range from good to slightly overpriced for their special blend of authentic and Tex-Mex dishes and the usual wait has been alleviated (for the most part) because of the expansion, making this a great lunch time treat.

Pros
  • Tasty dishes using real cheese
  • Plenty of patio dining on the River
  • Family-owned with a friendly atmosphere
Cons
  • Parking downtown can be a pain and costly
  • A few dishes are overpriced

Guide Review - Mexican Manhattan

Originally opened in 1958, Mexican Manhattan has moved only once since then – and only across the street from its original location. It has expanded twice and never closed once during either expansion, which shows its commitment to the customers. You will understand what we mean when you see the service and attention you are given when dining there.

The menu has some really great homemade items that are famous with the regulars. The Cheese Nachos are excellent and are smothered in real cheese, not imitation like some Mexican restaurants. The Chili con Queso and Chili Bowl are delicious. In fact, anything that comes with the family recipe chili on it will be good, even the enchiladas (although the gravy sauce is wonderful as well for enchiladas).

The combo plates are good, offering varying types of enchiladas, chalupas, guacamole salad and even cabrito and chicken mole along with rice, beans and tortillas. A few are overpriced for the amount of food you get. But if you value quality in your food, you won't mind paying the extra. You can also order food a la carte if you have a smaller appetite or want to spend slightly less money.

The only real drawbacks to Mexican Manhattan are the small selection of drinks, particularly for a restaurant with a River patio. Parking can also be a pain, like any restaurant downtown. But if you aren't interested in any alcohol beyond margaritas or draft beer, then you will be very satisfied with your meal at Mexican Manhattan.
